‘Legitimate rape’

What you might have missed over the weekend:

* Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who just won the primary to take on Sen. Claire McCaskill (D), explained  Sunday that abortion in cases of rape is not a major issue, because “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” (As Post alum Garance Franke-Ruta points out, this pseudoscience has been around for a while.) Obviously, Republicans are not thrilled. Akin says he misspoke, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan say they “disagree” and Rep. Denny Rehberg (R) — a Senate candidate in Montana — calls the comments “offensive and reprehensible.”
